Bula!

A big welcome to the latest Nukubati News, published on the International Dateline - where the sun starts its new day, everyday!

OLD FRIENDS OF NUKUBATI

Jim & Pattie from Long Beach, California, have just visited Nukubati for the third time. They have become such good friends with us all and this time they stayed for three weeks and we all had a great time. Jim & Pattie are known on Nukubati by their Fijian names, Timoci & Pasepa.

TRADITIONAL SPEARFISHING IS POPULAR!

Spear fishing has now become a very popular activity on the reefs off Nukubati. Low tide on a cloudy day seems to produce the best catches. Just look at these experts...

We introduced Timoci to a new sport – Spear Fishing !! Using a traditional Fijian spear, he went out on the reef to catch his supper.   It’s lucky Timoci doesn’t have a family to feed back on the island. But he does look pretty happy with his catch.

...and, doesn't Keith Foucher look pleased with himself!   Here’s John Bolton, from Melbourne, Australia. Really looks the part. His wife, Colleen, must have stayed back on the island to catch a book.

NUKUBATI EXTENSIONS

Peter is always doing something new on Nukubati.

Recent extensions to the Honeymoon Bures were done during our annual break in February pictured below.

Work has also started on the big bure on the hill (left). When finished, this bure will have commanding views along the north coast of Vanua Levu. From this lookout Peter will be able to see his enemy’s war canoes approaching and take appropriate action. When we explained to Peter that he had no enemies, he decided that we will have to use the bure for weddings and romantic dinners and stuff like that.

MAKING THE MOST OF IT

Lynn and Jay Berman made the most of their stay
at Nukubati. They visited Nuqumu village on Vanua Levu as well as making the journey to Kia Island
and Savusavu markets. Jay loves taking his snapshots and here are some of his highlights.

Lynn and Mary in Nuqumu Village are pictured top right and Kia Island below right.

SEA PLANE

Winston and Janette Doyle (below left) from Sydney leave on the seaplane after spending a week relaxing on Nukubati while Peter and Madeline Landau (below right) from the States arrive to start their relaxing week. The seaplane transfer provides our guests a scenic view of the coastal reefs, villages, rivers and lush green forestation of the coastal area of Vanua Levu and Viti Levu. Seaplane transfer is a great way to get to Nukubati.

NEWLY WEDS

Newly wedded couples from USA Guido & Amy Gutter (below left) and Paul & Gale Gibson (below right). The backdrop of sunset colours, the array of tropical flowers on the archway and the white sandy beach make memorable weddings on Nukubati.

BIG FISH!!

And to finish off with Pat McCrann’s fish story – just a little bit bigger than Timoci’s.

Nukubati Island has joined the re-launched branding “Select Hotels & Resorts International”

Nukubati was a member of Select in the early ‘90s until the brand merged with Small Luxury Hotels of the World” in 1996. The originator of the Select brand, Richard Rosebery, has now revived the organization with a new direction and mandate to be a marque of excellence in unique accommodation and travel experiences throughout Australia, New Zealand and the Pacific region. (See the Select collection on www.selecthotels.com).

Nukubati fits very well with the Select mandate and we look forward to a successful membership of the Select organization and successful marketing partnerships with all the Select properties in the Australasia & Pacific region. We are still members of the excellent worldwide group Small Luxury Hotels of the World. Both “Small Luxury” and “Select” are brands that demand of their members the same standards that we at Nukubati demand of ourselves. The words “small luxury” and “select” demonstrate the standards that our guests can expect when they visit Nukubati Island.
