Octopus season

1 September 2011

Its a great time of the year to be in Fiji - beautiful warm days and still cool at night. Its Octopus season - The Great Sea Reef is teeming with them - Eta shows how to catch them, but snorkeling is still the favourite activity of all guests here at the moment .........

Bula again , long time no blog

17 August 2011

Warm greetings from Nukubati... its been a long time since my last blog ... many reasons for not blogging ... but that doesnt really matter ... here we are. We have been very busy at the resort with many visitors in the first half of this year. The diving has been superb, the snorkeling awesome, the fishing great and this year we have been offering Tatavu - the Fijian Pikiniki(picnic) out at Vatumaqila every week - and that has been an absolute 'hit' with one and all. To taste fish that fresh - is a mouth watering experience that ruins one for life - as you keep looking for fish that is going to taste that great no matter who is going to cook that fish for you whereever you go - sorry folks - thats what we do at Nukubati - spoil you rotten!!!
Also we have had a lot of visitor this year from much closer to home - from Australia and New Zealand - thanks for coming - its nice to have our close neighbours here - perhaps the really cold winters have something to do with this influx or the strength of the AUD or the fact that the Great Sea Reef is getting known out there - I guess it doesnt really matter at the end of the day - for us its nice to finally get you to come and visit us up here in the Northern Islands of Fiji.
Our North American visitors continue to support us - this market really dropped off for us in the second half of 2009 and 2010, but we feel they are returning to Fiji and especially back to Nukubati - yaaayyy. We have had a lot of honeymooners ~ and guys if you are reading this - thanks for staying at Nukubati Private Island, Great Sea Reef and we hope you will think of returning to celebrate a special anniversary.
Ok now that I am back blogging .. there is more to write - about the great octopus hunts this season and the kind donations from guests to the school - pix and stories to follow.
Moce mada and you all take care.

Education

1 March 2011

Bula again everyone!

Apart from launching into our repairs and renovations programme in January - it is the month in which we get to meet the children and parents of the new scholarship recipients given by Nukubati Island every year. We started offering scholarships 16 years ago and our first ever scholarship recipient is now a fully trained pilot and he now teaches and trains young pilots at the Nadi Flying School. Needless to say ... we are very proud of Apenisa Golea and his mum, Marama our chef at Nukubati for the last 15 years.  In December last year another of our sponsored students graduated from the Univeristy of the South Pacific with a Diploma in Tropical Agrilculture. Soko is currently looking for work and was at the resort in January so he could use the fax and phone to enquire about work in Suva and Labasa and other towns in Fiji.

So traditionally, in January we get to meet the new scholarship winners with their parents as they prepare to go off to their new high schools.  Every year we give 2 scholarships to Qumusea District School and 2 to Kia Island District school ( Kia is located in the Great Sea Reef). The 2 students who have scored the hghest marks in the Primary School Leaving Certificate from each of the 2 schools are awarded a full scholarship to go to a secondary shool of their choice anywhere in the Fiji Islands.
